Now starting its 24th year, the TU-Baltimore County Public Schools Model United Nations is a dynamic simulation conference where over 250 high school students per year act as delegates of UN Member States. High school delegates represent their state as diplomats and role play the types of negotiation and diplomacy that occurs between ambassadors to the UN. This hands-on experience enhances critical thinking, public speaking, problem-solving and diplomacy skills, shaping young leaders into informed global citizens.
This program and its co-founder, Dr. Alison McCartney, have received numerous awards, including the American Political Science Association Distinguished Civic and Community Engagement award and accolades from Governor Hogan and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski for being the only program to maintain access for students during the Covid-19 pandemic. To date, over 5,500 high school students and 500 TU students have participated in the program.

In keeping with the spirit of Dr. Eric Belgrad, longtime Chair of TU’s Political Science Department, in whose honor it was created, the speakers will seek to guide the audience to think more clearly about the topic of their talk rather than present predetermined conclusions meant for the sterile kinds of ideological “debate” that is unfortunately so prevalent today.
