Towson ready to celebrate National Public Health Week
To help students make healthy choices, the university will look to engage students in at least 150 minutes of public health activity each day of the week in honor of the TU150 celebration.

From the dreaded “Freshman 15,” to rough study habits of finals week, it can be hard to make healthy choices in college.
To help students have a better understanding of healthy options available to them, Towson University will be participating in National Public Health Week from April 4-9.
Sponsored by Student Health Services and the College of Health Professions, there will be a variety of public health programs held each day to promote healthy student habits.
“The aim of National Public Health Week is to raise awareness about issues surrounding public health,” said Andrea Brace, assistant professor in the Department of Health Sciences. “Our goal is to engage students in at least 150 minutes of public health activity each day in honor of the Towson’s 150th anniversary celebration.”
Through a collaborative effort, the university has brought together unique events that will happen throughout campus at various times of the day. Just a few of the events include:
- “Get Yourself Tested” which features free STI testing on Monday, April 4 at University Union, room 314 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- “Get With Jess through Kung Fu,” takes place on Tuesday at the West Village Commons, meeting room 305 from 6 – 7 p.m.
- “Body Image Family Feud,” begins on Wednesday on the University Union Second Floor from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- On Thursday, the “Spring into Health Public Health Fair” takes over the Potomac Lounge from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
- Learn about helping the environment at the “Composting Workshop” on Friday, April 8 at the TU Urban From 12-3 p.m.
Each event during the week is free and open to Towson students. For a complete list of events, visit the Towson University Wellness Center Facebook page.
“We have organized activities that hit on many of the main areas of public health,” Brace said. “This includes promoting healthy lifestyles through diet and physical activity, prevention through screening, increasing knowledge through expert guest lectures, film screenings and tabling events and so much more.”
The week wraps up on Saturday, with the “MDPHA 5K Fun Run/Walk for Health.” There will be a registration fee of $25 for students and $35 for non-students. Registration begins at 3 p.m. with a starting time of 4 p.m. Those interested can also register for the race online.
