TU professor earns award for advancing student-led water research
John Sivey recognized by the American Chemical Society of Maryland Chapter
Chemistry professor John Sivey has received the prestigious Braude Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) Maryland Chapter in recognition of his outstanding, student-centered research exploring the chemistry of drinking water and aquatic environments.
Since joining Towson University in 2012, Sivey has built a reputation for combining impactful environmental research with meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities for students. His research team investigates environmental organic chemistry and the chemistry of disinfected waters, helping improve scientific understanding of water quality while training the next generation of researchers.
As chair of the Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science since 2023, Sivey also directs TU’s Aqueous Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, where undergraduate and graduate students collaborate on research examining environmental and drinking water challenges affecting communities across the United States.
The Braude Award honors faculty members at Maryland colleges and universities who demonstrate excellence in research while actively engaging students in the discovery process. In addition to receiving a commemorative plaque, Sivey was awarded funding to further support student research opportunities at TU.
The recognition reflects Sivey's longstanding commitment to creating impactful research experiences that prepare students for careers in science while contributing to solutions for real-world environmental challenges.
