Department of Finance

The Department of Finance offers accredited programs and in-depth courses that focus on corporate finance, investment, and financial planning topics with an emphasis on developing and applying financial modeling skills.

Striving for academic excellence, we cultivate a forward-thinking environment and encourage students to think about the social and economic welfare of the community while emphasizing ethical behavior. Students gain the knowledge, skills and perspectives necessary for positions such as analysts, financial planners, bankers, loan officers and more.

Recognized Programs

The Department of Finance offers the corporate finance concentration as part of the business administration major, as well as two tracks in financial planning and investments.

concentration in finance

Our finance concentration for the business administration major prepares students for careers in the corporate finance field responsible for capital budgeting and working capital. Common positions in the banking, insurance and real estate industries include business analyst, credit analyst and lender. Our program has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree programs incorporate at least 70 percent of the CFA® Program Candidate Body of Knowledge so that students are well positioned to sit for the exam to earn the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) credential.

financial planning track

Our financial planning track is designed to meet the growing demand for professionals in wealth management and advising. Pursue a rewarding career helping individuals maximize their investments and reach their goals as a personal financial planner, investments advisor or wealth management specialist. As one of the three colleges and universities with CFP Board Registered Programs in Maryland, the business administration major with a track in financial planning fulfills the education requirement for CFP® Certification Examination administered by CFP Board.

investment track

Our investment track provides students the necessary skills to manage assets placed in capital markets, including security analysis, investment strategies and portfolio management. Students in this track find positions in the wealth management field with careers such as research analysts and client relationship management.

minor in finance

We also offer a finance minor for CBE students who are not concentrating in finance or taking the financial economics track within the economics major.

Opportunities and Resources

Our programs utilize state-of-the-art resources and technology including the T. Rowe Price Finance Laboratory, which simulates a trading room environment. The lab is equipped with the Bloomberg Terminal, which brings together real-time data, breaking news, in-depth research and analytics in one fully integrated solution.

Our department offers various scholarships for academic excellence and leadership. We emphasize a close working relationship with professionals in the industry and believe in training students to be top-notch professionals through internships.

Students have opportunities to gain hands-on experience of the real world and build their professional network through the department’s student organizations, such as the Towson University Investment Group (TUIG), the Towson chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA) and Women in Finance.

Business Partnerships

We work with the Baltimore Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society to publish the Baltimore Business Review. In this applied business journal, we showcase our faculty's cutting-edge research, along with that of professionals in the field.
