Professor Molly Mee is proud that the most recent cohort in the middle school education major she helped to develop at Towson University had a 100 percent job placement rate. Towson is the first state university in Maryland to offer the middle school education major and produces the largest number of graduates in the major.

“It’s a very marketable degree. Schools seek out Towson graduates because they know how well prepared they are, from day one,” says Mee."

The middle school major provides students with the opportunity to focus on meeting the needs of students at this transformational period of their lives. “Middle school students are at a unique time in their lives developmentally, so our teachers understand that and are prepared to manage the classroom and support the needs of diverse types of students,” Mee adds.

“ Middle school education is a very marketable degree. ”

Mee is also creating a research database about students who graduate with a bachelor’s in middle school education that will produce information on graduation rates, how alumni are doing and how prepared they feel, as well as how school principals rate TU graduates.

The best way to prepare her students, Mee says, is to model excellence in her own teaching. A former middle school teacher herself, she shares her experiences as a teacher, from creating lesson plans to interacting with students in the classroom.

But it’s also important for future teachers to experience the school community beyond the classroom.

“Our internships expose students to every aspect of the learning environment – from the front office, hallways, and cafeteria, to special education and classes like music and art. They’re not just observing. They’re fully engaged in what’s happening throughout the school day.”
