The Mission of the Department of
Political Science
The Department of Political Science is a
core department of the College of Liberal Arts of Towson
University. The department educates students to develop political
knowledge and skills that will prepare them for further study in
graduate or professional education or that will prepare them to
enter the world of domestic or international public service or
business. Through support of the university’s general education
curriculum, the department teaches students the basic knowledge of
politics that promotes the values and understanding needed to become
active citizens of the country and of the world. The department
extends the knowledge and practice of politics through the
scholarship and work of its faculty and students.
The Vision of the Department of
Political Science
The academic program of the Department
of Political Science will be recognized for its rigor and its
integrity. The faculty of the department will be recognized for
their skills in teaching and for the significance of their
scholarship. The students who study in the department’s programs
will be recognized for their understanding of politics, their
ability to examine political phenomena critically, their ability to
communicate political ideas effectively, and their commitment to the
public political process. The department will provide opportunities
for active learning inside and outside the classroom. The
department will develop and provide programs that address the needs
of Baltimore and its regions, the state, the country, and the world.
The Objectives of the Department of
Political Science - the “Vital Few”
Provide students with solid
understanding of the nature and structure of politics in the
areas of American government and public administration,
comparative politics; international relations, law and the
judicial system, political theory; and state and local
government.
Develop students’ ability to examine
political issues critically and analytically.
Foster students’ sensitivity to the
importance of politics in daily life to build a sense of
citizenship of the nation and of the world.
Develop skills that will enable
students to pursue work and continued education.
Provide opportunities for active
learning inside and outside the classroom.
Support faculty and student research
and scholarship.
