Update on COVID-19 vaccination compliance

August 30, 2021

President Schatzel and Provost Perreault sent an update to campus Monday regarding vaccination compliance.

Dear TU students, faculty and staff —

All members of the Towson University community are expected to comply with the University System of Maryland vaccination mandate — either via a verified vaccination or an approved exemption for medical or religious reasons.

In compliance with that mandate, and with support of the COVID Response Leadership Team and shared governance leaders, TU is requiring students, faculty and staff who have not yet been vaccinated and who have not been granted an approved medical/religious exemption to the vaccination mandate to receive their first dose of the vaccine before noon on Friday, Sept. 10.

Students who have not been fully vaccinated, provided proof of a first dose or received an approved medical/religious exemption before noon on Sept. 10 will be disenrolled beginning Monday, Sept. 13. Residential students were not permitted to move-in last week unless compliant with the mandate.

Faculty and staff who have not been fully vaccinated, provided proof of a first dose or received an approved medical/religious exemption before noon on Sept. 10 will be placed on unpaid leave and expected not to report to campus beginning Monday, Sept. 13. Telework is not an option in place of compliance.

This requirement follows recent full approval for the Pfizer vaccine by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for those individuals ages 16 and older. Unvaccinated individuals pose a risk of spreading COVID-19 to others who are unvaccinated. As we have throughout the year, we encourage the entire TU community to get vaccinated as soon as possible to show that Tigers Care.

As of the start of the fall term on Monday, 94.5 percent of TU faculty and staff and 93.7 percent of TU students were compliant with the USM COVID-19 vaccination mandate. For those seeking vaccination opportunities, vaccinations are readily available for all individuals ages 12 and older at a multitude of locations. Visit  https://www.vaccines.gov/ to find a vaccination site near you.

Additional information will be shared directly with individuals who are unvaccinated and don’t have an approved medical/religious exemption. Unsure of your vaccination status? You can check your vaccination status anytime. To verify vaccination status or notate a single shot has been completed, visit Towson.edu/vaxverify and to apply for a medical/religious exemption visit Towson.edu/vaxexempt

Students, faculty and staff who are unvaccinated, even those with an exemption, are still required to complete the Tigers Care QuickScan daily, are required to undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing twice a week and are required to properly wear a mask in all indoor campus locations and also in a healthcare setting and on university transportation.

Please take action now to be sure you are able to maintain your access to campus. Thank you for continuing to show that Tigers Care.
