TU update regarding Title IX

The Towson University Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity shared an update with campus

This message is being sent on behalf of Towson University Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity:

Towson University is deeply committed to ensuring an inclusive and safe environment for each and every member of our community. TU strives to create an environment in which sex or gender discrimination, including sexual misconduct such as sexual harassment and sexual assault, stalking, and intimate partner violence, is not tolerated.

Earlier today, University System of Maryland issued a statement regarding the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) Wednesday release of new Title IX regulations mandating how colleges and universities must investigate and adjudicate sexual misconduct cases under Title IX, a federal statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex or gender in any federally funded education program or activity. Towson University has in place Title IX policies and procedures that comply with the statute and with prior OCR guidance. However, like all educational institutions that receive federal funding, TU is required by these regulations to amend its current policies to implement these new regulations. We will do so in alignment with USM policy.

Over the coming weeks, Towson University will take the time necessary to examine these new complex regulations to determine how to implement the new requirements in a way that best ensures our current system’s fundamental fairness, thoroughness, and sensitivity to all parties and witnesses. The Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity will engage and seek input from the University community in this effort. Providing an inclusive, safe, and healthy work and educational environment is our commitment to you.
