Towson University will host a Remembrance Ceremony this Friday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, when 19 al-Qaida militants hijacked four planes to carry out suicide attacks, killing 2,977 people.

The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial Garden, which is located in front of Newell Hall. The ceremony is open to both the Towson University community, as well as the public.

The event will pay tribute to all the individuals lost and injured during the attacks, honor first responders and those who have risen in service to defend freedom, remember the 69 Marylanders lost, including TU alumna Elizabeth Wainio ‘95. Wainio was aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked and crashed in Shanksville, PA.

Dario DiBattista, director of the Towson University Military & Veterans Center, will provide welcome remarks, followed by the raising of the United States flag by Towson University student veterans.

The National Anthem will be played by trumpeter Bernard Lewis, a senior information technology major. This will be followed by remarks from Towson University President Kim Schatzel.

This will be followed by a tribute to the 69 Marylanders lost on September 11, 2001, provided by Tracy Miller, a Maryland Gold Star Mother, and Jenna Hess, a junior pre-business administration major and Air Force veteran.

The event will close with a moment of silence, followed by the playing of Taps. All attendees will receive a commemorative pin and counselors will be on-site in case the ceremony is a trigger for guests.
