Mission Statement for the Department of History

As an integral part of the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of History at Towson University is deeply committed through its course offerings and other activities to providing students with a factual, as well as a conceptual understanding of the past, so that they will be more informed and active citizens of  a contemporary global society.

Equally important to our Mission is our effort to encourage and to facilitate life-long learning.  In addition to focusing significant energy on our History and History Secondary Education Majors, we also take great pride in the fact that our courses, especially our survey courses, contribute to five categories of the University’s General Education requirements, two of them writing intensive categories.

All of our courses are designed to encompass the broad sweep of world history in all major areas.  Yet in each individual course, students are trained in the skills which are not only essential in mastering the historical discipline, but are also indispensable to success in their future professions: sound reading and analytical skills, ability to construct and articulate arguments, and above all, perhaps, the ability to write clearly and effectively.

The graduate programs in which we participate, although designed in part for those who have already chosen a profession, also seek to sharpen analytical and writing skills in an atmosphere of humanistic learning.  The Mission of the Towson History Department is three-fold: to lay the basis for committed citizenship and civic engagement; to train students in the skills needed for success in a Metropolitan society; and to inspire the love of learning which is the hallmark of a liberal arts education.
