Towson University President Kim Schatzel has been elected as one of 12 new members of the Board of Directors of the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC), the organization announced recently.
President Schatzel adds the GBC board membership to a series of board appointments with key organizations around Greater Baltimore.
“I’m proud to be serving on the GBC board,” President Schatzel said. “The mission of the Greater Baltimore Committee aligns closely with that of Towson University, which serves as an anchor institution with a positive impact on the Baltimore community and its business partners.”
President Schatzel also serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the University of Maryland St. Joseph's Medical Center and on the Executive committee of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore. She is also a board member with the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, CollegeBound Foundation and the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education. President Schatzel also serves on the NCAA Division I Presidential Forum.
President Schatzel is one of less than two percent of university presidents that have extensive business and private sector experience, spending more than 20 years as a corporate leader and serial entrepreneur in the technology and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The GBC is a regional organization of business and civic leaders that includes businesses, nonprofit organizations and educational and civic institutions, serving as the leading voice for the private sector in the Baltimore region on issues relating to economic growth, job creation, workforce development, transportation, the business climate and quality of life.
Fellow board members include Senior Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer of Exelon/Exelon Utilities Calvin Butler, Whiting-Turner Contracting Company President and CEO Tim Reagan and Regional President of Greater Baltimore/Chesapeake Regions of M&T Bank Corporation August J. Chiasera.
Bradley Chambers 1991, President/President/Senior Vice President, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital/MedStar Union Memorial Hospital/MedStar Health, is a member of the board as well.
The new board members include executives and leaders of a number of organizations around Baltimore, GBC President & CEO Donald C. Fry said.
"The new members strengthen an already very strong Board of Directors, and will enhance the Board's private sector engagement in the economic and business recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic and the business competitiveness challenges that affect our region's growth and prosperity," Fry said.
The GBC’s membership includes more than 500 organizations, companies, nonprofits, educational institutions and foundations in the Greater Baltimore region. Its mission is to improve the business climate of the region by organizing its corporate and civic leadership to develop solutions to the problems that affect the region’s competitiveness and viability, according to its website.
TU is a GBC member organization.
Recently, President Schatzel was joined by Chancellor Perman and other leaders of universities in the region to discuss how institutions of higher learning are adapting to and managing through the COVID-19 pandemic.
