Bridges to the Doctorate

The Bridges to the Doctorate program aims to increase representation of individuals traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical sciences at the doctoral level.

For Prospective Students

Bridges to the Doctorate scholars will complete their Master of Science degree in a laboratory at Towson University and ultimately enroll in a doctoral program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) or elsewhere. While enrolled at TU, Bridges to the Doctorate students are provided tuition waiver, salary, and funding to travel to research conferences. The Bridges to Doctorate program provides the educational and financial support to ensure a successful transition to a PhD program.

In partnership with UMSOM and JHUSOM, Bridges to the Doctorate scholars will participate in professional development and research skills building activities. Activities include research seminars, workshops, rotations in labs at UMSOM and JHUSOM, doctoral level coursework, and GRE test preparation if required. 

Eligibility

The Bridges to the Doctorate program is intended to increase representation of the following groups of people in the biomedical sciences on the national level:  Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Americans, individuals with disabilities and those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. The following requirements will help determine student eligibility:

• A desire and motivation to earn a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences
• A Bachelor of Science degree in a biomedical related field (biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, virology, genetics, immunology, developmental biology, etc.)
• Grade point average > 3.00

• Apply to the Bridges to the Doctorate Program by January 10
• Applications will be reviewed and you will receive notifications of your standing
