Family Weekend

6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Burdick Hall Campus Recreation Center 

Work up a sweat, relax and stretch, or take a self-guided tour at the Campus Recreation facility.  All family members 18 years and over are welcome; Free. All participants must sign a waiver and be dressed in appropriate athletic attire to workout. 

11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Asian Art Gallery, Center for the Arts Room 2037 

Myungsook Ryu Kim reveals a world of harmonious connections across cultures, art, and life. She brilliantly merges classical East Asian art and philosophy with media techniques of the West. Through a profusion of colors, textures, and dimensions, the works explore change and impermanence, illuminate the interdependence of heaven and earth and humans and nature, interpret experience and spirituality, embrace the juxtaposition of poetry and painting, and celebrate Korean history.

This exhibition brings together artists who are curious about the lives unfolding all around us: not just those of humans, but the many beings, materials, and systems with whom we share the world. The phrase “more-than-human” reminds us that we are part of a vast web of animals, plants, microbes, machines, weather, chemicals and infrastructure. These artists imagine what it might mean to meet those presences halfway and to consider inner worlds we can’t fully know. They approach “nature” not as something distant or pure, but as it exists now: shaped by technology, politics, industry, and everyday life. As a result, familiar boundaries between nature and culture, human and machine, organic and manufactured begin to dissolve. Leaning into this complexity, the artists ask us to reconsider what kinship might mean today, and how we might live more thoughtfully within a world where even our oddest neighbors are part of the family. The Family Network is an inclusive group for parents and families of Towson University students and seeks to provide guidance to university administration on issues pertaining to students, parents, and the university. The Towson University planetarium is an all-digital system that allows for observing the sky at any time, from anywhere on Earth and from any vantage point in space. Land on the Moon and Mars. Get closer to the Sun than you ever thought possible. Check out what the stars look like from Alpha Centauri or other galaxies. See the echo of the Big Bang itself. The sky is no longer the limit at the TU planetarium. Let us know you’re coming on the main Family Weekend registration site.

This event is limited to families with students enrolled in the Honors College. Experience the people, opportunities and community of the Towson University Honors College during our annual breakfast gathering during Family Weekend. The highlight of the event is the Celebration of Scholarship & Learning, a poster symposium showcasing the work of Honors College students. Family members and students will have an opportunity to stroll through a sampling of the latest academic research by students and to talk with them about their independent research and travel abroad in a variety of concentrations. 3:00 p.m., Recital Hall - Center for the Arts 

Tickets go on sale on September 1st at 10:00am EST. Explore a mix of classical works for clarinet, horn, and bassoon about protecting teeny tiny animals, the intersection of funk and fugues, finding inner calm in uncertain times, and showcasing joy as a form of resistance. Performers include Towson University clarinet professor Natalie Groom and guest collaborators Kat Robinson (horn) and Qun Ren (bassoon). Hear world premieres and commissions for this unique instrumentation, designed as “flex” chamber music. The program is approximately 60 minutes without intermission.
