Preparing PreK-12 Teachers

Faculty in the FCSM have a rich background in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and STEM education. These faculty contribute to Towson University's teacher preparation programs – from early childhood through high school – helping future teachers to learn best practices in STEM education.

Science education faculty provide pre-service teachers with learning experiences that:

  • are guided by questions and problems;
  • involve active, hands-on learning;
  • emphasize evidence-based reasoning and other practices of science and engineering; and
  • address the Next Generation Science Standards.

Mathematics education faculty provide pre-service teachers with learning experiences that:

  • are guided by mathematical problems set in relevant contexts to reveal relationships between mathematical concepts;
  • involve both hands-on experiences with concrete materials and minds-on engagement focused on reasoning and sense-making; and
  • cultivate an appreciation for the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.

In so doing, education majors learn to become teachers who can effectively implement inquiry-based science instruction, problem-based mathematics instruction and the engineering design process.
