TUNE to host edible books festival on April 12

The contest will feature a celebrity judge: Jason Hisley, winner of reality TV show "Cupcake Wars" and owner of La Cakerie in Towson.

Towson University in Northeastern Maryland (TUNE) will host an Edible Book Festival Tuesday, April 12 in celebration of National Library Week. More than 30 participants from TUNE, Harford Community College and Cecil College are creating edible representations of a book series, novel, play, novella or short story for the celebration.

“I’m thrilled that Jason Hisley, winner of "Cupcake Wars" and owner of La Cakerie in Towson, has volunteered to be our celebrity judge, said Eden Parks, library associate at TUNE.

“We don’t hCakes decorated to look like books.ave a traditional library; it’s virtual, so the students miss some of the “library” feel you’d expect. Because of this, I like to try to plan neat things for our students that will help them have positive associations with the library.”

Hisley earned a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. He holds a pastry certification from the Restaurant School in Vitznau, Switzerland and is the owner and executive chef of La Cakerie, which has locations in Baltimore and Towson, Md. Hisley has also competed on "Cutthroat Kitchen" and "Sweet Genius."

The submissions must be at least 70 percent edible. All entries will be exhibited, documented, judged and eaten.

Prizes will be awarded for the following for Best in Show, Best Pun, Most Appetizing and Most Library. The event is open to students, faculty and staff. Towson University in Northeastern Maryland is located at 510 Thomas Run Road, Bel Air, Maryland.
