Towson University is riding high in Washington Monthly’s just-released College Guide and Rankings issue.

TU occupies No. 56 out of 386 U.S. public and private universities on the magazine’s 2016 Best Bang for the Buck – Northeast list. Washington Monthly identifies them as “colleges that are doing the best job of helping non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.”

In addition, the magazine ranks TU 84th among the 634 U.S. public and private master’s universities surveyed. The rankings reflect the extent to which colleges are improving social mobility, producing research and promoting public service.

Washington Monthly’s editors have long rejected the idea that “expense, luxury, and exclusivity should be held up as the highest values for colleges and students to aspire to.” Instead, they ask: What are colleges doing for the country?

“We are proud to be recognized again by Washington Monthly for providing a quality, cost-efficient education for our students,” said Towson University President Kim Schatzel. “We also take great pride in being recognized for our many contributions to improving the quality of life in our state.”

Washington Monthly’s unique methodology has been strengthened by new federal data on the average earnings and loan repayment rates of students from specific colleges.
