Student-athletes have a unique role at Towson University. They can serve as the faces of the university and have the responsibilities of succeeding in competition while also prioritizing school and physical, emotional and mental health. Student-athletes can use the tips below to excel in all aspects of their lives at TU—on and off the field.

1. Take advantage of workshops that help the transition into college athletics.

It’s a big jump and can add stress. Athletes can also participate in the Resilience Program, where they’ll gain valuable insights on mental skills to help them perform in and out of competition.

2. Utilize counseling and mental health performance services.

If at any point a student feels like they need help, regardless of circumstances or whether they feel like they’re struggling, they can use the readily available counseling and mental performance services. Blake Costalupes, the behavioral health coordinator for clinical and sport psychology, only works with student-athletes and can be scheduled for one-on-one sessions. The Counseling Center also has same-day appointment options.

3. Prioritize academic success.

Utilize the Dr. Francis S. Soistman Jr. ’79, ’15 (hon.) and Family Athletics Academic Achievement Center. Through the center, students not only have a quiet place to study, but they can access resources like academic advising, support in class selection, tutoring, printing, laptop loaner programs and help with graduation plans and internship opportunities.

4. Prepare for what's next.

Focus on financial literacy and career readiness in the Total Tiger Program. Students will need these skills beyond graduation—no matter their career path or future in sports.

5. Become an involved member in the TU community.

Students should take part in community service initiatives when they can because they'll build skills that they can’t through programming. Engaging in community service can help student-athletes feel fulfilled and often lead to increased social connections and a broader perspective, both of which can contribute to improved mental and emotional health.
