TU plans to install a physical tribute to the nine members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). With a goal of at least $75,000 this project will be fully funded through donations.
National Pan-Hellenic Council Tribute
Sometimes referred to as the Divine Nine, the NPHC organizations align with the beliefs of Dr. Julius Chapman, TU’s first dean of minority affairs, who was responsible for bringing TU’s historically Black Greek organizations to campus 50 years ago. The nine organizations include Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.
Ayers Saint Gross, a Baltimore-based design firm, is leading design efforts for the tribute, which will include a brick walkway lined with nine brick pillars. The pillars will be topped with plaques featuring full-color crests, mottos, and founding dates for each of the historically Black sororities and fraternities. A plaque on the front of the pillar will list chapter charter members.
TU’s installation will be adjacent to the bust of Dr. Chapman and will commemorate the history and legacy of these organizations. Chapman Quad serves our community as a focal point to celebrate the strength of our shared cultures. Construction on this project could begin as early as summer 2022 with the successful achievement of the fundraising goal.
The NPHC Tribute is just the first step in TU’s plans to recognize the presence and history of its student organizations.
