Five Reasons to Study Family and Human Services

Across the Ages

From learning about resources for families with children to case management for older individuals, you can broaden your knowledge base about all aspects of family life and the many transitions family members face individually and together.

Field-based experience

Internships, application of family science knowledge through field-based opportunities, and community service activities give you direct experience in the field and open your eyes to professional opportunities.

Build Critical Work Skills

Coursework gives you a host of professional and personal skills, including analytic, written and oral communication, critical thinking, program development, and client intervention.

Capstone Coursework

Each student participates in a culminating course that requires integration and synthesis of knowledge and community experiences acquired as a major in the department.

Professional Opportunities

Graduates pursue jobs in social services agencies, child and adult day-care centers, hospitals, assisted living and adult day services, family counseling centers, adoption and foster care programs, child and domestic abuse centers, and other nonprofit and government entities. Some positions require advanced degrees, while others are open to graduates with a bachelor's degree.

Family and Human Services Career Booklet

This booklet (PDF) focuses on the careers of some members of our alumni community as they help us answer a question that students consistently ask, "What can I do with this degree?" We believe our alumni and community partners, a few of whom are featured in this booklet, are the experts in answering this question.
