Michèle Gerring, Ph.D., French and Francophone Studies, has taught French at Susquehanna University, Allegheny College, the State University of New York at Fredonia and Grove City College. Her research focuses on Québec Studies, with emphases on the influence of French-language legislation on Indigenous communities in Québec, literature portraying the effects of damage to the environment on Indigenous communities in the province, and the literature of migration from Lebanon, Haiti, and Vietnam to Québec.
The granddaughter of a Canadian from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. Gerring spent a week in Montréal, Québec, in June of 2026, in order to give a talk at the Conference for the Association for Canadian and Québec Literatures, and a week in Québec City in June, 2024, when she participated in a week-long seminar on the culture, history, language, and literature of Québec that was sponsored by the University of Maine's Canadian-American Center. She has taught courses in French and the literatures, cultures, and cinemas of the Francophone world at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, as well as courses in international education. Her experience in teaching courses in French for the Professions and in organizing and facilitating well-attended campus-community French conversation tables demonstrate a strong orientation towards making French applicable to students’ academic, professional, and personal goals and to promoting a strong sense of community and intercultural exchange among speakers of French with diverse backgrounds and interests.
