The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers a number of awards and
scholarships each spring. Information on each is given below. An announcement is sent
by email to all department majors early in the spring term with instructions on how
to apply. Applications are due by the middle of February.
Mary Hudson Scarborough Award for Excellence in Computer and Information Systems
For outstanding academic achievement by graduating seniors in computer science, information
systems, and information technology. This is a non-monetary award.
Doris K. Lidtke Excellence in Service Award
For students majoring in computer science, information systems, or information technology
who have demonstrated academic excellence as well as have provided significant service
in their field (as member of a computer club or organization, tutoring, community
service, etc.). Minimum overall GPA of 3.5 required. Must be a senior at the time
of receiving the funding. To be used for tuition and fees. Full and part-time students
eligible. U.S. citizenship not required. Typical award amount: $2,600.
James W. Smith Scholarship
Awarded to a continuing student majoring in computer science demonstrating the qualities
of James W. Smith, a colleague in the department who passed away in 2001. This includes
enthusiasm for computer science as demonstrated through scholarly achievement and/or
encouraging and helping others to learn about the discipline; exemplary scholarship
in computer science courses; demonstrated ability in mathematics courses; evidence
of the potential for success in the computer science discipline; awareness of the
social impact of computing and computers on society; and the need for responsible
behavior of professional computer scientists. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.
To be used for tuition, fees, room and board. U.S. citizenship not required. Typical
award amount: $7,300.
Applied Information Sciences Scholarship
For students majoring in information systems who have demonstrated academic excellence.
Minimum overall GPA of 3.5 required. Must be a junior or senior at the time of receiving
funding. Full and part-time students eligible. Must be nominated in writing by a faculty
member within the department, and a current resume provided. U.S. citizenship not
required. Typical award amount: $3,200.
Wendy and Larry Letow Scholarship
For students majoring in computer science, information systems, or information technology
who have demonstrated academic excellence. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required. Must
be a junior or senior at the time of receiving funding. Extra consideration given
for those involved in intramural sports. Full and part-time students eligible. To
be used for tuition, fees, room and board. U.S. citizenship not required. Typical
award amount: $2,000.
CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service
Scholarships are available for students majoring in computer science with a concentration
in computer security. Contingent on continued funding by the National Science Foundation.

The Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum provides scholarships to Towson University students. The
Forum’s award will benefit successful full-time sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate
students studying Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology
or E-Business who have a 3.6 GPA or higher. Applications are accepted by the university
in November for the Spring semester and in April for the Fall semester.
