Lorenzo de Medici Semester Pre-departure Process

  • Get a passport immediately. If you do not have a valid U.S. passport, you should apply for one right away using the ‘rush’ procedure. You may do this at any main post office or by visiting the passport office in Washington DC. If you already possess a passport, please check that it has not expired and that it will be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return to the United States.
  • Review the Lorenzo de' Medici (LdM) Academic Calendar (PDF).
  • Review the appropriate LdM Course Schedule (see Fall 2018 tentative course schedule) and upload the LdM Application and Course Registration Form (PDF) to Horizons in the 'Additional Documents' section of your application no later than October 30 for spring and April 15 for fall. Registration is on a rolling admission basis-first come, first serve. Courses fill up quickly so we recommend that you submit this form early.
  • Review the Apartment Housing Booklet (PDF) or Homestay Housing Booklet (PDF) and upload a completed Housing Application to Horizons in the 'Additional Documents' section of your application and submit your Housing Deposit (seeing housing booklet for payment information) to the TU Study Abroad Office no later than October 30 for spring and April 15 for fall.
  • You will be notified of your housing assignment (location and roommates) within the week of your departure.
  • Upload a photocopy of the information page of your passport to Horizons in the 'Additional Documents' section of your application if you have yet to do so already.
  • Upload a standard passport-style photo (color, 2x2 inches, full face, front view) to the TU Horizons system under the 'Additional Documents' portion of your application no later than October 30 for spring and April 15 for fall.
  • Review the LdM Rules of Conduct (PDF).
  • Book your flight. Be sure to double check the academic calendar found above and on LdM's website and arrive on the designated check-in day and depart on the designated check-out date. We highly suggest that you fly into Florence Airport. Your flight must arrive before 4:30pm on the check-in day. You are responsible for making your way to the check-in location on the day of your arrival. Most students take a taxi from the airport to the check-in location; address and contact information will be forwarded to you within the week of your departure. Once you book your flight, submit a detailed flight itinerary to the TU Study Abroad Office.
  • Check our Resources page for student travel agency listings. NOTE: We recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover your flight in case of program itinerary changes or cancellation.
  • LdM requires that all students have a working cell phone on them at all times. You can purchase an Italian cell phone and SIM card upon your arrival in Italy. You may also choose to bring your U.S. cell phone with an international plan or purchase an Italian SIM card for it upon your arrival. Please note that if you choose to use your home cell phone with an Italian SIM card, your phone will need to be unlocked by your cell phone provider PRIOR to departure for Italy. More information can be found in the relevant Pre-departure Booklet that will be sent via email to you later in the semester.
  • Apply for your Student Visa when possible. The TU Study Abroad Office will notify you once your official Italian acceptance letters and other needed documents are ready for pick up. Once you receive your visa, upload a copy to the TU Horizons system under the 'Additional Documents' portion of your application.
  • Attend the Towson University pre-departure orientation - Saturday, April 28th from 10:00 – 1:00 pm. The meeting will be held in University Union. Non-TU students are welcome but not required to attend and may receive their pre-departure materials via mail upon request.
