Physical Education Major

Over the past two decades, physical education has undergone a transformation in rigor and focus and now is recognized as essential to a young person’s overall education experience and a foundation for lifelong healthy living (SHAPE America).

Physical education provides students with a planned, sequential, K-12 standards-based program of curricula and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge and behaviors for active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy and emotional intelligence (SHAPE America).  Our Physical Education Teacher Education program prepares our majors to effectively plan and deliver this standards-based content and instruction.

Area of Study

In this major, you will gain knowledge and strategies to support the development of human movement, skills, and confidence in physical literacy.

The documents found on the advising page will help you plan your academic career at Towson University. You can also view all degree requirements and course descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog.

This program prepares you to become a competent physical educator consistent with developmentally and instructionally appropriate guidelines provided by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.  Graduates of the program are eligible for certification by the Maryland State Department of Education as a K-12 physical education teacher.
