Resources for Students
The Department of Nursing and Towson University offer many resources to support student success in the rigorous nursing curriculum.
Student Handbook
Students must abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the Student Handbook for the Master of Science in Nursing. This handbook includes essential information for student success, including but not limited to the following:
- standards and functional abilities for nursing practice
- program requirements for clinical practice
- academic policies and procedures for progression in the ELMS program
- evaluation and grading policies for the ELMS program
- Department of Nursing clinical policies
- inclement weather guidelines for clinical practice
It is the responsibility of students in the entry-level Master of Science (ELMS) program to familiarize themselves with policies and procedures outlined in the Graduate Student Handbook.
The Department of Nursing reserves the right to regularly update and modify the student handbook as needed. Graduate students should refer to this site or their Blackboard courses each term for the most recent version of the handbook.
Student Success Coordinator
The Student Success Coordinator is available to discuss nursing students’ academic needs, facilitate academic progression, and connect students with university resources. Through individual appointments, students can receive support in developing plans and identifying strategies for academic success.
The best tactic for student success in a challenging program is to seek help before you need it. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the Student Success Coordinator's services from the start of the program.
SERVICES
- test-taking strategies
- note-taking and textbook reading tips
- study skills
- holistic stress management
- time management strategies
- Supplemental Instruction (SI) supervision & training
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-facilitated academic support program that the Department of Nursing has adopted for select courses that have historically been especially challenging for students. SI is internationally recognized, evidence-based, and completely free for students. Through regularly scheduled, peer-led group study sessions, students have the opportunity to reinforce what they learned in the classroom. Sessions are led by student SI Leaders who previously completed and demonstrated academic competency in a course. SI Leaders are trained to use collaborative learning techniques, facilitation strategies, peer-to-peer interaction, and small group activities. SI sessions are offered regularly throughout the semester. Participation is free, voluntary, and strongly encouraged. Data shows that regular SI attendance is correlated with stronger academic performance and higher grades at the end of a course.
