Nicole Steinberg, Ph.D.

Biography

Nicole Steinberg is a musicologist specializing in opera, trauma, and performance studies within the broader discourses of Holocaust remembrance and commemoration. She has recently published her research on Holocaust opera and the institutional framing of memory in the Opera Journal, and has additional work forthcoming with the Oxford Handbook of Music, Sound, and Trauma and the Oxford Handbook on Music and Grief. Her current book project extends this inquiry into the work of Jewish-American composer Hugo Weisgall, whose operas offer a largely unexplored site for examining the relationship between Jewish identity, historical memory, and postwar American culture. 

With a passion for applied musicology, Steinberg frequently couples her scholarly research with her experience in arts non-profit management. Currently, she serves as the Cultural Programs Coordinator and project lead of Voices in Solidarity: Baltimore’s Black and Jewish Operatic History in partnership with the the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture and the Jewish Museum of Maryland. The project, grounded in scholarship, bridges community divide through place-based storytelling and reconciliation.

Nicole Steinberg earned her PhD in musicology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She also holds an M.M. from and a B.M. in Voice Performance from Towson University and the University of Miami respectively.
