About the Minor in Jazz/Commercial Music

The Jazz/Commercial Music Minor offers an inclusive and accessible entry point into the formal study of jazz/commercial music, supporting students from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. Owed to its focus on performance, composition and improvisation the minor in jazz/commercial music is distinct from the music department’s existing minors in music, music industry and music technology.

Admission Requirements

Acceptance to the Jazz/Commercial Music Minor requires an audition and interview. Contact the music department for audition information. The audition requirements for the minor are similar but less rigorous than the jazz/commercial concentration in the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree, providing a more accessible option while still maintaining performance standards.

Degree and Course Requirements

The Minor in Jazz/Commercial Music requires at least 20 units. Jazz/commercial (J/C) music minors are required to have a department adviser to assist with building meaningful schedules.

Jazz/commercial music minors must complete a minimum of 12 units toward the minor at Towson University. This minor also requires students to complete a minimum of six units at the upper level (3xx or 4xx).

The upper level units may be earned in any combination of MUSA jazz/commercial applied lessons or ensembles or MUSC courses. For additional details on course options view the Minor in Jazz/Commercial Music in the TU Catalog.
