A welcoming, friendly face

Once a shy high schooler, Moises Marin ’19 has used campus involvement to build strong relationships at TU.

Moises Marin '19 spent two years as an Orientation Leader. This summer he will serve in the Office of New Student and Family Programs as the student director of family programs.

When he first started at Towson University, Moises Marin '19 wasn’t interested in stepping out of his comfort zone. The Frederick County, Maryland native admits that he was a little shy, and just wanted to focus on school.

After spending his freshman year adjusting to college life, the economics major felt that it was time for him to get more involved with Towson University’s campus. His first real involvement on campus was serving as an Orientation Leader with the Office of New Student and Family Programs.

Suddenly, the shy teen was the first interaction many TU students and their families would have as part of the campus community. Those who knew him as a freshman may have expected him to be nervous. That wasn’t the case.

“My experience has just been phenomenal,” Marin said. “I had a blast doing new student orientation — it was so much fun. And through orientation I got to meet a lot of students and their families, and I got to connect with more people.”

It was spending those two summers as an orientation leader that led to Marin to apply to become a resident advisor (RA). He is currently an RA for Tower C in The Glen Complex.

And after spending the summers meeting new students, it made perfect sense for him to be an RA for a floor of freshmen students.

“Since I mainly work with first-year students, I love getting to help them with transitioning into college life,” Marin said. “I love helping them transition, I love getting to know them, and I just enjoy helping them with their little problems and trying to get them to adult.”

After starting as orientation leader and resident advisor, Marin continued to get involved on campus. He now works in the Office of New Student and Family Programs as the student director of family programs. As student director, Marin works with families in helping them understand the best ways to help their students through their Towson University journey.

The advice he gives students and their families stays true to his own background.

“You quickly learn you can’t hit the books all the time, you have to get involved,” Marin said. “I encourage families to encourage their students to not only take advantage of the resources that are here at TU, but to also expand and not just focus on school.”

With his new position as student director of family programs, Marin won't be leading  orientation groups around campus this summer. And while his position has changed, he's still excited to be a part of the "Welcome to TU" team.

“It was really rewarding and I really learned to love the campus more,” he said. “This really opened the doors for so many other things, and the experiences I’ve gained from being involved on campus, and meeting new students, families, staff and faculty.”
