Spring Break Closing for Residence Halls

Residence Halls close at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16th and will reopen at noon on Sunday, March 24thStudents will be unable to remain in their building during this break and must vacate the building.

Students are not required to remove any belongings during any break period throughout the academic year. Students should take their keys and OneCard with them so they can access their building and unit upon return from break.

Student Tasks before Leaving

Students leaving must do the following:

  • Shut off lights and water.
  • Shut and secure all windows.
  • Remove all trash and perishable foods.
  • Lower your thermostat to LOW heat or 68 degrees (do not turn your unit off). See HVAC instructions below for respective buildings.
  • Unplug all unnecessary items but leave microfridges plugged in.
  • Take home any valuables (i.e. medications, glasses, technology [phones, laptops, chargers], and important documents). Towson University is not responsible for any personal property lost, stolen or damaged.
  • Make necessary travel arrangements to ensure the residence halls are vacated before 9 a.m on March 16, door access will be turned off at that time. Anyone still in the building after that without prior permission will be fined $175 from their TU student account and asked to leave immediately. 
  • Sign the closing door signs upon vacating for break. Door signs will be attached to room doors by RA staff. We ask residents not to remove these closing door signs.

Closing Inspection

A closing inspection to ensure spaces are ready to be unoccupied will be conducted in all rooms by the residence hall staff once students have left.

Residence Hall HVAC Settings

Before leaving for break periods, we ask residents to help us save energy by setting their thermostats to 68 degrees. To provide the best guidance, residents can find their thermostat setting instructions linked below. 

Late Departure Policy

Any student who has not left the residence halls by the deadline will be subject to a $175 fine, which will be assessed to their student account.

Important housing dates (including community closing dates and times) for each residence hall are published on Housing and Residence Life.

  • Only those students who have been granted advanced permission in writing by the Department of Housing and Residence Life professional staff will be allowed to stay past the deadline without being fined.
  • Students who need to remain past the 9 a.m. closing time will need to complete a Late Stay Request Form within the Student Housing Gateway by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 10.
    • Late Stay Requests will only be approved for the following reasons:
      • medical
      • disability
      • emergency reasons related to late departure
      • academic requirement

Students can direct any questions about their late stay request to the Residence Life Coordinator of their respective community.

Spring Break Closing for Students in Apartments and Nine-Month Housing

Apartments and nine-month residence halls do not close for Spring Break. Students may remain in communities or come and go as they wish during this break period.

Students planning to be away during the break period should ensure they do the following:

  • shut off lights and water.
  • shut and secure all windows.
  • remove all trash and perishable foods.
  • lower your thermostat setting to LOW heat or 68 degrees (do not turn unit off).

Community Centers will be closed during this break period, however resident assistant staff will still be on call. Students should follow the information posted at the community center if they need assistance.
