Working as a Peer Academic Coach

Peer academic coaches serve a vital role at the Tutoring and Learning Center. Coaches act as guides, instructors and mentors to students. Our academic coaching program is certified through levels I and II of the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Peer Educator Training Program Certification.

How Do I Become a Peer Academic Coach?

TLC employs approximately 6 - 8 peer academic coaches every semester. The application is open year-round, but we do most of our hiring in August and January.  Peer academic coaches must

• complete an application
• have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
• have accrued at least twenty-four (24) credits at Towson University
• have references from at least two (2) Towson University faculty members

Peer Academic Coach Employment Process

1. Complete the interest form. 
2. If selected for an interview, you'll be asked to complete an application and include the names and emails of two Towson University professors to act as references.
3. Interview with our peer academic coaching coordinator. Interviews are usually conducted virtually via Zoom and are about thirty (30) minutes.
4. After your interview, we will contact your references. Once we hear from your references, we can notify you of our decision.
5. You'll work with your new supervisor and the Payroll Office to complete your I-9 paperwork with original documentation and your W-4 paperwork for direct deposit. 
6. New academic coaches must complete four (4) hours of asynchronous training via Blackboard and one (1) hour of in-person training before they can begin working with students.
