The Writing Center provides individual writing support to all members of the Towson community, including undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff members. We work with writers at any stage of the writing process from brainstorming to polishing a final draft.
Writing assistants work with writers to develop and organize their thoughts, sharpen their focus, and communicate their ideas more clearly and precisely. We support writers with any type of writing project, whether a PowerPoint presentation for a sociology class, a lab report for biology, or a resume for a summer internship.
Our job is to read through your writing and provide reader-based feedback on everything from idea development and audience analysis to organization and grammar. It is important to note that we respect writers and rely on your insights and participation. Please introduce any documents you think would be useful, such as assignment guidelines or rubrics. Finally, please tell us what you would like to work on in the session. At the Writing Center, our goal is to be as helpful as possible in the time we have. Let us know if there are specific things that you are concerned about.
Writing Assistants are undergraduate and graduate students who are recommended by faculty to work in the Center. Currently, writing assistants represent every college and over twenty disciplines on campus, including political science, business, journalism, biology, mass communications, nursing and education.
Types of Tutoring Appointments
Appointments at the Writing Center are held both face-to-face and online via Zoom. We offer 30, 60, or 90-minute-long appointments, depending on the length of your paper. If your paper is 7 or more pages double-spaced, please be sure to attach your paper to the appointment window at least one hour before the appointment. With longer papers, our writing assistants read over your work ahead of the appointment to allow more time for discussion.
