How did you find this internship?

This position was a placement as part of the education program.

What advice on the internship application process would you give to another TU student interested in this internship?

Work closely with your faculty adviser to help you find a mentor teacher/school that you fit well with.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

I taught full-time as the art teacher, first for 8 weeks at an elementary school in Baltimore County, followed by another 8 weeks at a high school in Baltimore City. I planned age-appropriate units for my students, prepped and distributed materials, and instructed lessons for my students. I got to practice different behavior and classroom management strategies and had the support of my mentor teacher and supervisor to help me troubleshoot along the way. Other tasks outside of the classroom included lesson planning, IEP meetings, faculty meetings, professional development days, and carpool duty. It was nice because I got experience doing exactly what I will be doing when I'm a full-time teacher.

What did you find most rewarding in your internship?

The most rewarding thing about my internship was the relationships I built with my students. I knew how much I cared about teaching, but my passion for it grew immensely when I realized that I was making an impact in my students' lives. I truly grew to love all of my students, and I know most felt the same for me. Just the other day, I had a senior in high school tell me that he'd never liked art until I taught him- It's moments like that which make all the hard work and long hours very much worth it.

What were the challenges you faced in your internship?

Teaching full time takes a lot of time and energy; I didn't realize how hard it would be to write, plan and teach so many different lessons at the same time. The time management and life/school balance I was used to in college completely changed with this internship. The other major challenge that all student teaching interns face is behavior management. I had a whole new appreciation for my own teachers; kids are often terribly behaved and a large part of teaching successfully is being able to engage, and reign in, even the worst of your students.

If another student at TU was interested in your internship next year, what skills would you recommend they develop in the coming semesters to prepare?

There's a lot with teaching that you just can't prepare for- teaching is a wonderful, wacky world. Being able to be flexible, work under pressure, and manage stress are the most important skills. Learning how to take care of yourself and manage time (even if you think you can already to this- think again), as well as getting some teaching experience prior to student teaching are also really helpful. Try working at a summer camp, or teaching after school classes/workshops would give you a real leg up! Just know that no matter what you will do great!
