How did you find this internship?

I found this internship through a TU friend/peer referral.

What advice on the internship application process would you give to another TU student interested in this internship?

Pick a department that interests you in doing research. Talk to the doctors conducting the research and show your interest. Also, mention any relevant experience.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

I went around the pediatric emergency department and conducted surveys with the families that were in the rooms. The survey was to provide research on the food insecurity of low-income families and their nutrition. There were questions asking if they had enough money to buy groceries for the whole week, if they ever were afraid they wouldn’t have enough food, what their salaries were, and more. Qualified families would have a chance to win free groceries which I would hand out.

What did you find most rewarding in your internship?

Being able to give groceries to families in need and providing information on places they could get free meals or groceries from was rewarding.

What were the challenges you faced in your internship?

It was sad to see a lot of families who didn’t have enough groceries, or their food provided little nutritional value.

If another student at TU was interested in your internship next year, what skills would you recommend they develop in the coming semesters to prepare?

Be open to the experience. It is like an unpaid job, but it provides a good feel for what working in a hospital is like. Don’t push yourself to do more hours than you can manage; you are volunteering your time and effort.
