The accounting major provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to transition into a career in accounting in a variety of settings and prepares students for the CPA examination in order to enter the public accounting profession. Students complete the lower-level required courses, upper-level business required courses and upper-level accounting required courses for the accounting major.

The accounting minor is for students who want advanced accounting skills and knowledge that will be beneficial to their careers, but aren’t interested in becoming CPAs. The minor is a perfect complement to majors in business administration, economics or math with a concentration in actuarial science and risk management, but it is open to students from all programs other than accounting.

If you already hold a bachelor's degree in accounting from another institution, the additional specialized accounting course work will count toward the 150-hour requirement become licensed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Maryland and many other states.
