Special Education Concentration

Preparation for Certification

This degree prepares learners for an endorsement in special education and the program is designed for individuals who hold a valid certificate in teaching or a related field. Because this program does not lead to initial licensure, professionals with an undergraduate degree in an area outside of education should consider the MAT in Special Education.

At the completion of this program and after passing the required MSDE Praxis II test, graduates will be prepared to receive an endorsement in special education.

The program provides the skill development and knowledge base established by the Council for Exceptional Children's Standards for Beginning Special Educators. Completion of course requirements meets the Maryland State Department of Education's Special Education Generic Certification in:

  • Infant–primary (birth-grade 3), or
  • Elementary–middle (grades 1-8), or
  • Secondary–adult (grades 6-12+) levels.

The program emphases are:

  • inclusive practices,
  • collaboration and consultation,
  • translation of effective instruction,
  • assessment,
  • research into practice, and
  • cross-categorical disability approach.
