The University and Professional Service award is given to the person who has made contributions, including service both inside and outside of Towson University.  This year’s recipient came to TU in 2006 as an Adjunct Professor, and just seven months later, was appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor.  In 2013, our recipient was promoted to Associate Professor.  Most notably, he has served on the BTU President’s Council, Rank and Tenure Committee, University Partnership Working Group Committee, University Middle States Re-Accreditation Committee, College P & T Committee, Merit Committee, and College Diversity Committee.  At the departmental level, this faculty member currently serves as the Department of Science Education Group Coordinator and member of the P & Tenure Committee.  Our recipient has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals and has served as “Senior Personnel” on an NSF-funded undergraduate education grant.  More recently, our awardee has served as “Faculty Professional Development Coordinator” in the recently funded $1,000,000 Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant.  In 2016, our recipient received the University System of Maryland Board of Regents’ Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 2017, the Association for Science Teacher Education Honors.  One nomination letter about our awardee stated that our recipient is “universally respected and recognized for service leadership”.  Another letter highlighted that our awardee goes out of his way to ensure the well-being of new faculty” and that his “service is outstanding.”  Still another nominating letter stated that “this faculty member has been extremely helpful, supportive, and an inspiration that new faculty can look up to.”  “This recipient’s commitment and continued service towards [his/her] profession, department, university and community has been an inspiration.”

Join me in offering congratulations to Dr. Rommel Miranda from the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences.
