ALEKS Scores & Mathematics Pathways

Towson University has developed different mathematics pathways for students, depending on how algebra-intensive their required mathematics courses are. Depending on his/her chosen major, a student will be advised to follow one of those pathways. For most students, the decision where to begin their mathematics pathway will be based on their score on the ALEKS assessment. The tables below present the most common mathematics pathways and the minimum ALEKS scores for eligibility for different mathematics courses within those pathways. Students should be aware of the mathematics requirements of their major when consulting the tables.

Non-Algebra Intensive Pathway

Students who plan to major in disciplines that do not require algebra-intensive courses, such as Criminal Justice, Dance, English, or Mass Communications, usually follow this pathway.

ALEKS Score Mathematics Courses You May Enroll In
Below 30 MATH 100 Foundations of Mathematical Reasoning*
30 or above One of the following courses (depending on major):
MATH 105 Mathematical Ideas
MATH 111 Finite Mathematics
MATH 204 Mathematical Concepts and Structures I*
MATH 231 Basic Statistics
MATH 237 Elementary Biostatistics

*
Courses marked with an asterisk do not satisfy the Core 3 requirement.

Algebra Intensive Pathway I

Students who plan to major in disciplines that require some algebra, possibly up to MATH 211 Calculus for Applications, such as Nursing, Business, and some Biology tracks, should  follow this pathway.

Algebra Intensive Pathway II

Students who plan to major in STEM disciplines that require at least MATH 273 Calculus I, such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, etc. should  follow this pathway.
