Review of Academic Departments

The review of academic departments satisfies the University System of Maryland requirement to review all undergraduate and graduate degree programs on a seven-year cycle.

The USM requirements consist of: (1) a self-study, (2) an external review, and (3) a USM report. Each of these required documents must be reviewed successively at the department, college, graduate studies (for graduate programs), and Office of the Provost. Finally, USM reviews the USM report. The review analyzes the performance and status of the department from the time of the last review, details any new programmatic directions, and articulates any proposed strategic initiatives.

Follow-up Action Report Follow-up Report provides a progress update on action items.

Timeline

The USM requirements take place over the course of approximately 18 months from Jan/Feb of year 1 to June of year 2. The follow-up action report occurs two years later.

The Associate Provost and the Director of Accreditation and Compliance Services meet with the department representative to discuss the process at the beginning of the first spring semester. The USM Report Schedule displays the seven year cycle of cohorts.
