Review of Academic Departments

TU's Review of Academic Departments (RAD) process satisfies the University System of Maryland (USM) requirement to review all academic programs on a seven-year cycle. It is overseen by the Office of the Provost.

The RAD process comprises: (1) a self-study, (2) an external review, (3) a summary report submitted to USM (which is reviewed and approved by the USM Board of Regents), (4) action plan implementation, and (5) a follow-up progress report. The RAD process involves the participation of the department, the Dean of the College, the Dean of Graduate Studies (for graduate programs only), and the Office of the Provost, as well as external reviewers.

The RAD Guidebook provides a detailed outline of the expectations and requirements of the RAD process, which is designed to promote quality assurance and program improvement. The RAD process analyzes the performance and status of programs within the department from the time of the last review, details any new programmatic directions, and articulates any proposed strategic initiatives and/or actions (in the form of action plans) based on any recommendations that emerge as a result of the review.
