Meet Our Staff

liz scarbrough



Liz has a passion for helping children, young adults and families. She joined Towson University over 20 years ago, first as a technology trainer and then as a learning specialist. Mrs. Scarbrough received her B.A. in chemistry from the University of San Diego, followed by her M.S. in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. Most recently she completed her M.Ed. in early childhood education at Towson University. In her free time her greatest joy is spending time with family. She also enjoys solving puzzles and playing games. Liz is NCLCA Learning Center Leadership Certified - Level 3.

Assistant Director

Jeremy earned a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from Towson University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Baltimore, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Instructional Systems Development from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and is currently completing an Ed.D. in Instructional Technology at Towson University. Jeremy has taught at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and started his journey in higher education employment as an Undergraduate Mathematics Tutor before becoming a Tutoring Coordinator here at Towson University. He has a passion for helping students reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom. In his free time, he enjoys cheering for the local sports teams, spending time with family and friends, traveling, and training for triathlons.

Administrative Assistant 

Keke joined The Tutoring & Learning Center in 2014 and brings three years of USM experience in academics, advising as well as a passion for helping others succeed. She earned her bachelor’s in social sciences with a minor in women’s studies. In her spare time she enjoys listening to music, dancing, cheering for her favorite sports teams, and spending time with her family.

Janae Carter


Learning Specialist: Academic Skills Coordinator

Janae received her B.S. in Liberal Studies at Lesley University and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Adelphi University. She has been teaching and aiding students in reaching their learning goals for over a decade and working in higher education since 2020. Janae is a born and bred New Yorker who is always on the lookout for great pizza and bagels. Other than teaching, her passions include dance, reading, and writing. She also enjoys experimenting in the kitchen and exploring historical sites.

Kyle Cummings



Computer Information Sciences Coordinator

Kyle is an Information Technology major pursuing his B.A. in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. He also works as the Lab Systems Administrator for the department. In his spare time he enjoys photography, technology, and playing various musical instruments.

Liina, a Towson University alumna, completed her M.S. in physical organic chemistry at UMBC. In addition to coordinating the science tutoring for The Tutoring & Learning Center, she is also an instructor for the Department of Chemistry.

Program Specialist 

Angela enjoys the vivacious college atmosphere of students seeking a valuable goal. Born and raised in Baltimore, her path turned toward Towson University. She attended TU as a student, worked on campus as a student assistant, earned a B.A. degree in mass communications and devotes her career in higher education as a full-time staff member. In addition to her enjoyment of working with college students for over 21 years, Ms. Simms cherishes church fellowship, giving to the needy and missionaries, traveling, interior decorating and delicious meals with friends and family.

Learning Specialist: Math Coordinator and Technology Specialist

Sandrine earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from The City University of New-York and a master of science degree in applied mathematics with a concentration in actuarial science from Boston University. Sandrine has been teaching in higher education for over 7 years, focusing on improving the learning experience for students. She joined Towson University in 2013 as an adjunct faculty for the department of Mathematics. On her spare time, she loves spending time with her family. She also enjoys volunteering in assisting high school students with their mathematical research at the Greater New-York Math Fair. Her learning journey is continuous and she is always seeking academic innovation. Mrs Sandrine also completed the 'Online Edge Certificate Program’ offered at TU.

Emily Hadden

Science Support Graduate Assistant

Emily is pursuing a Masters degree in forensic science. She recently graduated from Berry College with a B.S. in chemistry. She is excited to help facilitate a love of science among students, while helping them achieve their goals. In her free time Emily loves to visit local zoos and aquariums, especially ones with red pandas. She also enjoys reading, exploring antique shops, and taking dance classes. 

Alice Klein

Academic Renewal Program Teaching Assistant 

Alice is pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Psychology. She recently graduated from James Madison University with a B.A. in Psychology. During her time at JMU, she was a psychology peer advisor for undergraduates and loved helping others navigate their college experiences. She is excited to support undergraduates in pursuing their passions and overcoming obstacles in their academic careers. 

Nick LaBella

STEM Graduate Assistant 

Nick is working towards his Masters degree in Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He graduated from James Madison University (JMU) with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and Science. During his time at JMU, Nick was a Resident Advisor and would assist freshmen in their transition to college. He was also the Treasurer of the JMU Mathematics and Statistics Club. He has always loved working with data and especially loves analyzing statistics of his favorite sports teams.

Rene Perez

Academic Renewal Program Teaching Assistant 

Rene is pursuing a Master’s in Experimental Psychology and is currently in his second year. He graduated from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Psychology. In addition to working as a teaching assistant for The Tutoring & Learning Center, he is also a Clinical Research Coordinator at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center Pulmonary Care and Sleep Medicine. He enjoys reading books on Greek mythology, traveling, and hiking in his spare time.  

Jennifer Vargas

Academic Renewal Program Teaching Assistant 

Jennifer is pursuing her M.A. in School Psychology. She recently graduated with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Sustainability from the University of Maryland, College Park. After UMD, Jennifer worked at a mental health hotline center and is now excited to start working with Towson students. In her spare time, Jennifer loves to be with family and friends and spend time outdoors. Some of her favorite hobbies are playing volleyball, weightlifting, and doing her nails.
