Baltimore Association of Nepalese in America (BANA): Bridging Cultures & Building Communities
Founded in 2005, the Baltimore Association of Nepalese in America (BANA) is a pivotal organization that fosters cultural preservation, provides social support, and builds community in the Baltimore area (BANA, n.d.).

Serving as a bridge between the Nepalese diaspora and the broader Baltimore community, BANA plays an essential role in celebrating Nepalese heritage while encouraging and assisting community members as they adapt to life in the U.S. and gain a deeper understanding of American society. Over the years, the organization has broadened its services and programs to include initiatives in education, health and community building, reflecting its commitment to immigrant integration and the welfare of all its members.
Historical Context: Building a Home Away from Home
BANA emerged from a growing need within the Nepalese immigrant community to preserve their cultural identity while adapting to life in the United States. The story of BANA is deeply intertwined with the historical migration patterns of Nepalese immigrants who sought new opportunities, stability and community connections in the Baltimore region. Many Nepalese initially came to the United States in the late 20th century, driven by a combination of political unrest, economic challenges and the allure of educational and economic prospects abroad.
Significant waves of Nepalese immigrants moved to the United States in the 1980s, with increasing numbers arriving in the 1990s and early 2000s. Key events, such as Nepal’s Maoist insurgency (1996-2006) and subsequent political instability, encouraged many families to seek safer and more stable environments (Bohra-Mishra and Massey, 2011). The Baltimore region became a destination for these immigrants due to its affordable living conditions, opportunities for employment and proximity to existing Nepalese communities in the broader Maryland and Washington D.C. area.
Subodha Panta, who was president of BANA when this research was conducted, reflected on the journey of the Nepalese immigrant community in the Baltimore region and the organization’s role in supporting them. Panta noted that as more Nepalese immigrants arrived, they encountered the dual challenges of adapting to American society while preserving their cultural heritage for future generations. The establishment of BANA in 2005 marked a transformative milestone, providing the Nepalese community with both social support and opportunities to share and celebrate culture. Initially, BANA focused on helping newcomers adapt by offering essential language assistance and fostering a sense of belonging, which eased the transition to a new country.
Cultural Preservation and Celebrations: Bringing Nepal to Baltimore
BANA plays a crucial role in preserving and celebrating the most important festivals in Nepal, creating a sense of home for the Nepalese community in the Baltimore area. By organizing traditional festivals, such as Dashain1 and Tihar2, BANA provides an environment where Nepalese immigrants can celebrate their heritage and share it with the broader Baltimore community. These events offer a chance for Nepalese immigrants to reconnect with their roots, keeping alive the customs and values that are deeply embedded in their culture.

In addition to celebrating Nepalese festivals, BANA also organizes lively street festivals around Dashain (festive time) in downtown Towson. These events feature traditional Nepalese dance performances, authentic Nepali cuisine and fashion shows that showcase Nepalese attire. The street festivals serve as a cultural bridge, inviting Baltimore region residents to experience and appreciate Nepalese heritage firsthand.
By aligning these celebrations with major Nepalese cultural events, BANA fosters a unique form of cultural diplomacy that strengthens the bond between the Nepalese community and greater Baltimore.

Cultural Preservation and Impact: Keeping Traditions Alive
At its core, BANA is dedicated to preserving the culture of Nepal for future generations. Through vibrant festivals, traditional music and dance performances, and religious ceremonies, BANA showcases the rich diversity of Nepalese heritage. These events not only provide a space for the Nepalese community to connect with their roots but also introduce Baltimore region residents to the beauty of Nepalese culture. BANA's youth programs play a critical role in cultural preservation, offering children the opportunity to learn traditional Nepali dance and language. These efforts ensure that even those born and raised in the Baltimore region maintain a strong connection to their heritage.

Empowering the Community: Social Services and Engagement
Beyond its cultural mission, BANA is deeply invested in the empowerment and well-being of its members. The association offers a variety of programs aimed at promoting physical, emotional and social wellness. From dance and language classes to yoga, fitness, and immigration support, BANA provides essential services that help community members navigate life in the U.S. while staying connected to their cultural roots.
Immigration Support
One of BANA’s most impactful services is its immigration support program, which assists new arrivals with legal paperwork, job readiness workshops and other resources essential for adapting to their new environment. The association’s holistic approach to community building includes educational and sports events that foster personal growth and strengthen the bonds between community members (BANA, n.d.).
Support for Senior Citizens
BANA extends its commitment to community well-being by organizing special programs tailored for senior citizens aged 60 and above. According to Panta, “These include tours to local Hindu temples and churches, allowing elders to connect with their spiritual and cultural practices in a supportive community environment. By facilitating these tours, BANA helps seniors remain active and engaged, fostering a sense of belonging and fulfillment” (Panta, S., personal communication, February 22, 2024).
Free Health Clinics
In collaboration with Baltimore County health organizations, BANA hosts free health clinics that include essential services such as flu shots. These clinics ensure that members of the Nepalese and greater Baltimore community, particularly seniors and underserved individuals, have access to preventive healthcare. Participants only need to complete a simple enrollment form to take advantage of these services, making it accessible and convenient for all.
Educational Initiatives: A Future-Oriented Approach
BANA’s commitment to education is exemplified through its partnership with the Baltimore County Health Department for the ALL-STAR Education Program, which aims to prevent substance abuse among adolescents. By employing evidence-based practices, BANA ensures that its programs are both effective and sustainable, providing a solid foundation for a healthier future for the Nepalese community in the Baltimore region (BANA, n.d.).
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
As BANA continues to grow, its leadership is focused on expanding its role as a cultural and social anchor in the Baltimore region. Plans include forging stronger partnerships with local government, expanding health and education services, and increasing youth engagement programs. “BANA also aims to collaborate with other Nepalese associations across the U.S., creating a nationwide network that strengthens the voice of the Nepalese diaspora,” says Panta. (Panta, S., personal communication, February 22, 2024).
BANA stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, community service, and social integration. Its unique blend of cultural activities, educational programs, and public health initiatives has made it an indispensable part of both the Nepalese and Baltimore region communities. As BANA looks toward the future, its commitment to unity, diversity and empowerment will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come.

About the Researcher: Riyana Shrestha

Growing up in Nepal, I developed a deep appreciation for the richness of culture and tradition. After high school, I moved to Bangkok, Thailand, to pursue my bachelor’s degree. Living in Thailand provided me with a unique opportunity to experience the interconnectedness of Asian cultures and how they shape daily life. This exposure deepened my appreciation for the traditions and values celebrated across the region and broadened my perspective on the importance of cultural exchange.
Later, I moved to the United States to continue my education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Webster University and a master’s degree in Information Systems Management from Towson University.
