Hurricane Maria brought high winds and devastation to Puerto Rico, but Julio Quiros-Santiago stood strong. Thanks to his resourcefulness and the support of Towson University, he transferred to TU to complete his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management.

The opportunity to solve problems and engage in critical thinking has always energized Quiros-Santiago. By studying business, he felt he could learn about organizational structures, operations, and how a company integrates its core values.

He was drawn to the Human Resources concentration because he could “serve as a support to the individuals who strive to achieve the goals of the company on a daily basis.” In addition, he is motivated by the chance to help management integrate the culture of the company to build employee morale and labor engagement with the goal of increasing productivity and performance.

“ I was able to grow professionally and academically thanks to services and organizations willing to help. Incoming students should learn all they can about the services TU has to offer. ”

Helping others is a constant in Quiros-Santiago’s life. He came to the mainland after the storm to find income opportunities to help his family back in Puerto Rico. In his first semester, he connected with TU’s Tutoring and Learning Center and became a Spanish language tutor. He joined TU’s chapter for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and became the secretary for that organization. He is an enthusiastic promoter of TU services.

“I was able to grow professionally and academically thanks to services and organizations willing to help. Incoming students should learn all they can about the services TU has to offer.”

As he looks to his future, Quiros-Santiago will combine his altruism with continued personal growth.

Following graduation, he started a new job as a recruiter with the Department of Defense. He also plans to take the SHRM-CP (Certified Professional) certification and to begin a master’s degree in business administration. In all of his endeavors, he will be a strong advocate for those he represents and serves.
