Gerontology Major
In the coming decades, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than 20 percent of the nation’s population will be 65 or older, which puts increasing stress on an already overtaxed health care delivery system.
Gerontology, the study of human aging, is increasingly becoming an important field with applications in virtually every industry and profession, from health and wellness to business, education and recreation. Created in 1998, Towson University’s gerontology program was the first such undergraduate degree program offered within the University System of Maryland and is one of 100 programs currently offered in the United States that leads to either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.

Careers in Gerontology
The program prepares you for positions in the field of aging and provides the knowledge and skills required for admission to graduate and professional schools. Pursue a career in the public or private sector in specialized housing developments, health care programs and services, recreation and fitness centers, and businesses that cater to older adults. Internships
Each undergraduate gerontology student completes at least one internship. Students typically work in state and federal agencies, residential settings, care management, and advocacy organizations and nonprofits serving older adults and their families. Honor Society
Sigma Phi Omega, the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology, has established the Delta Rho Chapter at Towson University. The honor society was created in 1980 to recognize the excellence of students and professionals.
