About the Department

 

The Department of Communication Studies is home to almost 500 students majoring and minoring in the three primary dimensions of communication studies:

  • advocacy and public discourse
  • identity and culture
  • leadership and organizational communication

Additionally, the department houses the Cultural Studies program that focuses on:

  • critical theory
  • cultural critique
  • the art of advocacy

The department provides both theory and research as well as applicable skills that will prepare you for a variety of careers.

Towson debate has a long legacy of student excellence, both inside and outside of debate. Our students go on to be come lawyers, doctors, teachers, and more. Many of our students also become active in their communities, fighting for a better world.

Speak Up, Speak Out! Community

SUSO! is open to all TU students who are interested in learning how to use their voice to create stronger communities by encouraging diverse voices. The community will teach students how to find and use their voices and then how to amplify their voices for the betterment of their communities

3rd Annual Communication Studies Symposium

March 28, 2024

9:30AM - 1:00PM in University Union Ballrooms A, B, C

Title: Advocating Change: Public Discourse in Turbulent Times. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Eric King Watts from Wake Forest University. He’s a rhetorical and cultural studies scholar whose work focuses on voice and the imposition of voicelessness, particularly through the lens of race but also incorporating gender and class. There will be a keynote and breakout sessions to follow.

TU Public Speaking Competition

April 10, 2024

6:00PM - 8:00PM in University Union RM 324 and 322

Title: How My Cultural Identity Has Shaped Me. The Public Speaking Competition will feature the top speakers at Towson University, who have been selected through an ongoing competition. The top three speakers will be awarded financial scholarships for their successful speeches.

COMM Student Showcase

COMM students will have the opportunity to present on their experiences with internships, independent studies, studying abroad, or other experiential learning efforts during the Spring 2024 semester.
