Ever wondered what it is like to be a mass communication major at Towson University? Here’s an opportunity to find out!

Two MCOM students

As a mass communication (MCOM) major for a day, you will:

  • learn about careers in advertising, public relations and digital and broadcast journalism
  • experience interactive workshops led by MCOM faculty
  • get a behind-the-scenes look at hands-on equipment and training
  • meet with MCOM students, faculty and alumni
  • tour our facilities, classrooms and campus

Parents, students and guests are invited to attend and learn about TU’s Department of Mass Communication, Financial Aid, University Admissions, Housing and Residence Life, and meet with the department’s First Year Experience (FYE) advisors.

Fall 2026

Date: Friday, October 16, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Location: Towson University, Van Bokkelen Building

  • 9 - 9:30 a.m.: Check-In
  • 9:30 - 10 a.m.: Welcome — MCOM Faculty/Staff
  • 10:10 - 10:40 a.m.: Session 1 — students attend faculty-led academic workshops; parents / guardians attend info session on admissions and financial aid
  • 10:50 - 11:20 a.m.: Session 2 — students attend faculty-led academic workshops; parents / guardians attend info session on Housing and Residence Life and FYE Advising
  • 11:30 a.m. - Noon: Panel discussion — MCOM students and alumni
  • Noon - 12:15 p.m.: Question and answer session
  • 12:15 - 12:30 p.m.: Closing remarks (exit survey and swag pick-up)

Three Tracks
MCOM students choose from one of the following three tracks on which to focus:

Digital and Broadcast Journalism Track
Students learn about the challenges facing journalists today and how to effectively communicate in the digital world. Students learn how to report and write news, produce digital and visual content, edit text and video, work under deadline pressure, and practice journalism in an ethical manner.

 Advertising Track
Students learn how to promote products and services, create branding and develop strategies to reach diverse audiences and drive customers to products.

 Strategic Public Relations Track
Students explore how to develop and implement public relations campaigns using all types of communications to promote individuals and organizations.
