Admission Requirements

Towson University welcomes international applicants who hold or seek an F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the United States. International students may also be required to provide proof of English-language proficiency and provide a course-by-course credential evaluation. When submitting a high school transcript, if it is not in English, it must be translated by a school official before submission.

In addition to the above international requirements, students must meet the following admission requirements based on their application type:

  • Freshman/First-Year (currently enrolled in secondary school or has graduated with no college coursework taken after graduation)
  • Transfer (secondary school graduate currently or previously enrolled at another college or university)
  • Graduate (seeking admission to master's or doctoral programs)

Application Process

In the application process, we consider international students to be anyone who intends to obtain an F or J Visa.

Yes, there is a non-refundable $50 undergraduate application fee.

No. Official transcripts must be sent directly from your school or a credential evaluation service electronically or via email to .

If you attended college or university outside the U.S., you are required to submit a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency (e.g., WES, ECE, TEC) that includes coursework from all universities attended. 

You must submit an official English translation that exactly matches your original transcript. This translation must be performed by an accredited evaluation service or an official at your school and cannot be done by the student.

English Proficiency

Towson accepts TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, and PTE Academic scores sent directly from the testing service. TU also offers other options for meeting the English Proficiency requirement, which you can view here.

Towson University may consider a waiver for students who have completed their secondary or post-secondary education entirely in English from certain countries where English is the official language.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Yes. Towson offers merit-based scholarships for new international freshman and transfer students — no separate application required. Fall first-year students studying in the United States for the first time may also be eligible for the You Are Welcome Here Scholarship. Scholarship decisions are typically announced in January for Spring applicants, and in March for Fall applicants.

No, only merit-based scholarships are available directly through the university, but students may explore external funding sources such as sponsorship and private scholarships and donations.

Documents & Visa

All official documents must be sent directly by the testing agency to Towson University. This includes tests for English proficiency and credential evaluations, if neededOfficial high school transcripts may also be sent from a school counselor or other official to .

Students who have attended a college or university outside of the United States after graduating from High School/Secondary School are required to provide a course-by-course credential evaluation with GPA. 

We accept course-by-course credential evaluations from NACES accredited international credential agencies  

Enrolled students receive an I-20. To enroll, students must first be admitted and then submit an enrollment contract and non-refundable $200 enrollment deposit. At that time, our International Student and Scholar Office is notified and contacts enrolled students with the next steps in the I-20/visa process.

Enrollment & Post-Admission

Yes, a $200 enrollment deposit is required after admission to secure your spot at Towson University and enroll as a student. This deposit is not required to be reviewed for admission or for merit scholarships, and is submitted once a student is ready to enroll.

Yes. If you attended a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, we will review your completed coursework for potential transfer credit. 

If your coursework was completed outside the United States, a credential evaluation is required. Transfer credit is determined based on the results of that evaluation, and credits are not guaranteed. 

The International Student & Scholar Office (ISSO) will provide orientation and registration details once you’ve received your visa and I-20.
