to learn about the connection between severe weather, natural hazards, and vulnerability.
Find out how emergency management teams work to prepare and help communities in the
wake of severe weather. Consider the economic and public health repercussions of severe
weather. Finally, learn how you can be better prepared for whatever Mother Nature
brings our way.

About the facilitator
Michael J. Allen, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of climatology in the Department of Geography and Environmental
Planning at Towson University, a climate scientist, and a 2023 Fulbright Scholar. A
Pittsburgh native, Michael earned a B.S. in Earth science-meteorology from California
University of Pennsylvania (now PennWest). Completing both a M.A. and Ph.D. in geography
at Kent State University, his research explores the intersection of weather and climate
on human health particularly as it relates to extreme temperatures, climate variability
and change. He has a number of peer-reviewed publications in journals including Physical
Geography, Theoretical and Applied Climatology, and the International Journal of Climatology.
His research on seasonal climate change has also been highlighted by National Geographic.
