Transfer Students

Transfer students are welcome to apply to the Towson University nursing major! This page provides information and resources for prospective transfer students interested in nursing.

Applying to Nursing as a Transfer Student

Transfer students are subject to the same admission criteria and deadlines as current TU students. In addition to applying to the program, students must apply to the university and adhere to the transfer admissions policies. Admission to the university is not a guarantee of admission to the major.

You may apply the nursing major before you apply to the university, but admission to the university is required for admission to the major. The Department of Nursing encourages transfer students to take advantage of the transfer resources listed on this page to ensure a seamless transfer and a strong understanding of your transfer courses will apply to admission requirements.

Transfer Resources

Transfer Admissions is the best resource for students with questions related to university admission processes, transfer course equivalencies, and transfer planning. If you plan to transfer to TU for nursing, you should utilize Transfer Admissions’s resources early in your undergraduate career. Early planning allows you to establish a transfer plan for a seamless transfer experience.

Transfer planning can help you to satisfy the nursing major’s prerequisite courses and university Core Curriculum requirements through transfer credit as well. Appropriate course selection and awareness of the competitive program admission criteria are essential for timely degree completion.

Course Equivalency Resources

This is a list of resources for students who want to understand how their courses will transfer to TU. For any questions about course equivalencies, consult with Transfer Admissions.

  • Transfer Evaluation System (TES) - This is a database containing approved course equivalencies for transfer courses. This page can help students see if a course at their current or previous school has already been approved as equivalent to a TU course.
  • Individual Course Petitions - This page contains information on how to request a course equivalency review. The Nursing Admissions office will defer to the appropriate academic department at TU for new course equivalencies. If you have already had your transfer credits evaluated by Transfer Admissions and believe a course you transferred should be equivalent to our prerequisite courses, you must follow the equivalency request process.
  • Pre-Transfer Guide & Course Planner (PDF) - This version of our pre-transfer guide is for students transferring from schools other than MD community colleges. It includes a fillable course planner that you may use to identify which courses you have taken or will take for each of our prerequisites. If you need assistance with determining equivalencies, contact Transfer Admissions.

Quick Facts for Transfer Nursing Applicants

  • Transfer courses may be used to satisfy nursing prerequisite courses.
  • Transfer coursework is subject to the same grade requirements and repeat limitations as TU coursework for nursing admission eligiblity.
  • Original transcripts are used for application review. An official transcript from every school attended must be submitted to University Admissions.
  • The Nursing Admissions office follows the university's transfer credit policies when determining whether a course can satisfy a prerequisite course.

Transferring from Another Nursing Program

Students who have begun their nursing studies at another college/university must apply to the nursing major like all other students. Transfer students must complete all required nursing courses at TU. If you are offered admission to the nursing major and have completed nursing courses in another baccalaureate nursing program, you may request an individual evaluation of those courses by the department. Nursing course equivalency review is only available to students formally admitted to the nursing program. Pre-transfer evaluations are not conducted for any nursing courses.

If you are interested in transferring and have previously been unsuccessful in any nursing courses or a nursing program (including withdrawing from it), additional materials will be required with your application. Please review the Individual Admissions Policy for more information.
