History Secondary Education Concentration

Students who plan to major in history with the secondary education concentration should meet with an adviser in the Department of Secondary & Middle School Education  in addition to their history department adviser. History majors in the secondary education concentration are eligible, upon graduation, to apply for certification to teach history in grades 7-12.

Admission and Degree Requirements

Students must apply for admission to teacher education programs at Towson University. View degree requirements in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Students who want to teach social sciences at the middle-school level may be interested in the secondary education-middle school major, which offers certification for teaching the following subjects at the middle-school level: English, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Students should apply for formal admission into the Secondary Program when they have met the following criteria:

  • Completion of at least 30 completed college units
  • a 2.75 cumulative GPA for all postsecondary institutions attended - official transcripts required for all schools except Towson University (for which unofficial printouts are accepted).

Student Teaching

Students do not begin student teaching until they have completed all of the coursework in history and the other social sciences and have received a grade of at least C in all of those courses.
