Directed Reading & Individual Study

Students may choose to do an individual reading or research course with a professor.

Before they can register for an individualized course, students must first get the consent of the professor they would like to work with as well as the consent of the department chair. Directed reading and research courses can be repeated for a maximum of 6 units each. A different topic must be covered in each directed course.

In a directed reading course, students do a series of in-depth readings dealing with a specific time period, topic, problem, or comparative developments selected by the student in consultation with the professor. Students doing a directed reading course register for HIST 497 [597], "Directed Reading."

Prerequisites: In order to be eligible to register for HIST 497 (597): "Directed Reading," students must have completed 15 units in history (or 9 units in history and 6 units in the related discipline), and students must have a minimum average GPA in history of 3.00.
In a directed individual research course, students do research and reading on a specific historical topic in consultation with their professor, giving considerable attention to historical methodology. Students doing an independent research course register for HIST 496 [596]: "Directed Individual Research."

Prerequisites: In order to register for HIST 496 [596]: "Directed Individual Research," students students must have completed 15 units and have a minimum average GPA in history of 3.00.
