Barnes & Harris Halls

Named after TU's first two Black graduates, Barnes Hall and Harris Hall are located in the West Village.

In 1959, Ms. Marvis Barnes and Ms. Myra Harris changed the university forever as they earned their degrees and became TU’s first Black graduates.

Founded as the Maryland Normal School in 1866, TU was racially segregated as part of Maryland’s then-segregated educational system. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court, with its decision in the case of Brown vs. The Board of Education, outlawed racial segregation in public schools.

TU named the residence halls after Ms. Barnes and Ms. Harris because they continue to inspire current students by their courage to be the first Black graduates and by their careers as esteemed educators.

Barnes Hall houses 334 students and is managed by TU Housing and Residence Life. Harris Hall is one of four West Village Houses and is managed by capstone on campus management.
