National Scholarships and Fellowships

As a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing chemical-science research and collaboration, the ACS supports recent graduates and graduate students interested in becoming high school chemistry teachers through the ACS-Hach Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Scholarship. The scholarship provides a $6,000 stipend towards the completion of a master's degree in education or secondary chemistry/science certification, as well as support and mentoring throughout the recipient’s three-year teaching commitment.

The scholarship provides a $6,000 stipend towards the completion of a master's degree in education or secondary chemistry/science certification, as well as support and mentoring throughout the recipient’s three-year teaching commitment.

The STEM Teachers Scholarship presented by the AFCEA grants scholarships to students pursuing a graduate degree or credential/licensure in order to teach STEM subjects in K-12 schools. Awards total $2,500.

The Applegate-Jackson-Parks Future Teacher Scholarship annually awards $1,000 to undergraduate and graduate students in honor of three Michigan public school teachers fired for their refusal to pay union dues. Candidates demonstrate academic achievement, high professional standards, and exemplify their demonstration to Right to Work principles.

The Aspen Ross Scholarship awards $2,000 to students pursuing a degree in education whose life or immediate family has been affected by cancer. Candidates must be planning a career in primary or secondary education and demonstrate academic excellence.

The Barbara Lotze Scholarship presented by the American Association of Physics Teachers offers a $3,000 stipend to students training to become high school physics teachers. Successful candidates demonstrate academic excellence and present a course of study that prepares them towards a career in physics secondary education.

The Brown Medical and Educational Foundation (BMAEF) is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to providing community health services and educational support. The BMAEF Education Scholarship provides funding for students from marginalized racial groups pursuing a degree in education. Candidates demonstrate leadership or public service experience.

The Doc Dempsey Scholarship supports students pursuing helping professions with a $500 award. Care-giving professions include but are not limited to medicine, mental health, and teaching.

The Dr. Emma Lerew Scholarship provides between $2,500 to $10,000 in funding to excellent students from underprivileged backgrounds pursuing a career in education. Candidates are evaluated by on assessments of need, academic achievement, and community involvement.

The Edward G. and Helen A. Borgens Elementary Teacher Scholarship is a merit-based award which grants $1,500 to students pursuing a career in elementary education. Candidates must be twenty-five years of age or older and demonstrate academic excellence.

The Future Educator Scholarship presented by the confectioners Mrs. Prindables encourages students to study education and shape lives through this $1,000 award. Applicants are asked to explain what they have to offer to the students of the future.

The Maryland Workforce Shortage Students Assistance Grant Program provides merit- and need-based scholarships for students entering various fields in need of qualified personnel. $4,000 awards are available to full-time university students, and $2,000 awards are available to part-time students.

Recipients of the Hattie N. Harrison Memorial Scholarship must work full-time as a director or senior staff member in a licensed Maryland childcare center or as a licensed family daycare provider in Maryland after graduation.

The Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT) Program at Philips Academy in Massachusetts is a summer program that prepares students from underserved or marginalized communities for graduate school. During the month of July, IRT Scholars study an intensive syllabus that exposes them to the rigors of graduate education. Program benefits include individualized support to clarify education and career goals, in-depth graduate program exploration and research, application coaching, and application fee waivers. Prospective scholars demonstrate a dedication to eradicating racial disparities in education and pursuing a career in teaching, counseling, or school administration.

The James Madison Fellowship applicants compete only against other applicants from the state of their legal residence. To be eligible to apply for a fellowship, you must:

  • be a U.S. citizen
  • be a teacher, or plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or civics classes where you will teach topics on the Constitution at the secondary school level (grades 7–12)
  • possess a bachelor’s degree or plan to receive a bachelor’s degree no later than August 31 of the year in which you are applying

Professional Teaching Obligation

After receiving the master’s degree, each Fellow must teach American history, American government, or civics where you will teach topics on the Constitution in grades 7–12 for one full year for each academic year of funding received under a fellowship, preferably in the state from which you were awarded the fellowship.

The maximum amount of each award is $24,000, prorated over the period of study, and in no case shall the award exceed $12,000 for one academic year of study. Normally, Fellows receive less than these maximum amounts. Payments are made only for the actual costs of tuition, required fees, and books (as well as room and board if required to live away from your principal residence), and are made only for the minimum number of credits required for the award of the degree.

Failure to complete your graduate degree, to attend the Summer Institute on the Constitution, or to teach qualifying subjects in grades 7–12 for the requisite amount of time entailed by the award will result in forfeiture of the fellowship and require the return of all funds paid under the fellowship, plus applicable interest under federal law.

The J-Squared Project is an immersive training program for students pursuing a licensure to teach secondary mathematics at Boston University. J-Squared scholars are trained to teach mathematics while simultaneously raising their students’ consciousness about social justice. Scholars receive full tuition, participate in workshops and seminars, and learn from mentors. Successful completion of scholars’ certification program is followed by a commitment to work for two years in a high-need district.

The Knowles Teaching Fellowship is a four-year program that supports early-career high school STEM teachers. In the first two years, Fellows examine their classrooms as systems and reflect on their identities as teachers. In the latter two years, Fellows build on their expertise by engaging in collaborative work with colleagues and analyzing policy and broader environments. The Fellowship Program provides a stipend and connects Fellows to mentors, as well as to a broader regional and national community of science and mathematics educators. Candidates demonstrate content knowledge, a commitment for professional growth, and a dedication to cultivating inclusive, student-centered classrooms.

The American Association of School Personnel Administrators presents the Leon Bradley Scholarship Program following their belief in the benefits of having diverse educators serving as role models for students. The award encourages undergraduate students from under-represented groups to enter school leadership through a $3,500 scholarship.

The Mister Rogers Memorial Scholarship provides project funding for graduate students interested in the role of children’s media in childhood development and education. The $10,000 scholarship can be applied to research or the development/production of children's media production.

The Education & Communication Scholarship presented by the National Dairy Shrine awards students pursuing a career in dairy industry education or communication with a $2,000 scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on leadership experience and academic achievement.

The “Pass the Torch” Teacher Scholarships funds living expenses not typically covered by financial aid. One $5,000 scholarship is granted to a student pursuing a career in elementary education and another $5,000 scholarship is granted to a student pursuing a career in secondary education. All finalists are also given a $100 Amazon gift card an one year of free access to Teachers Test Prep online courses. Candidates submit a short video where they share the story of a teacher that inspired them.

The Essential Visionaries Fund awards undergraduate students to making a meaningful impact within K-12 school systems and healthcare fields. Recipients demonstrate leadership experience, community service, and academic excellence. Yearly scholarships range up to $10,000 and are renewable for four years.

The TEACH Grant is a federal program that provides up to $4,000 a year for a total of $16,000 towards undergraduate programs, and $8,000 towards graduate programs. Candidates must demonstrate academic excellence and major in education or a high need subject area. Grantees agree to teach full time in a low-income school for four years after degree completion.

Teachers of Tomorrow is a nationally recognized alternative teacher certification provider which provides its training fully online. Every year, Teachers of Tomorrow provides 20 dedicated and passionate educators with New Teacher Scholarships, which cover the full $6,000 Teachers of Tomorrow program fee.

The Teaching Fellows for Maryland Scholarship is an award that invests in future educators in Maryland. The scholarship fully covers annual tuition to students in higher education programs that lead to a Maryland professional teacher’s certificate. Upon completion of their studies, Teaching Fellows work in a Maryland high-needs public school. The scholarship is renewable for up to three years.

Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards: Summer Fellowships

The Office of Competitive Fellowships and Awards at Towson University offers a summer fellowship each year that supports two students engaged in efforts to effect positive change in communities on- and off- campus, and that fosters TU student leaders working for the public good. Activities include community engagement, internships or research occurring over a 10-week period in the summer. Collaboration or partnership with an external organization is encouraged. Students are required to identify a faculty mentor for their project. The stipend for 10 weeks is $5,000. Faculty mentors will receive a stipend of $1,000.
